Our curriculum is the substance of what we teach. The curriculum shapes and determines what pupils will get out of their education experience at Abbey Village.   Our school is a true community school with a warmth that permeates the whole building.  The family ethos of our school is our great advantage and it lies in the heart of our mixed age classes.   

Our curriculum is carefully designed, planned and organised to meet the ever changing dynamics of our three classes. The uniqueness of every child is recognised and valued. As such, our curriculum embraces opportunities to support pupils to become thoughtful, motivated, collaborative and innovative learners capable of engaging in their own lifelong learning journey and thriving in a world of constant change.   We want every child to feel valued and experience success in a wide range of curriculum areas. Through the curriculum we can impact on how children feel about themselves, so that they become resilient and confident learners.

We plan our curriculum in four phases and have agreed a long-term plan for each class.  This indicates what themes are to be taught in each term, and to which groups of children.  Through the themes and individual subject areas we encourage our children to have enquiring minds, to question, to be curious and excited about their learning so that they develop the skills and knowledge needed to function in today’s world. We provide opportunities for our children to move beyond being passive recipients of knowledge to become knowledge builders with the skills and dispositions capable of creative and innovative problem solving. To make learning as interesting and meaningful as possible for the children, our curriculum themes start with an enquiry question.  We encourage our children to develop expertise in all area thorough meaningful and purposeful opportunities featuring local people, local places and interesting local facts. 

At Abbey Village, our definition of progress is the widening and deepening of essential knowledge, skills, understanding and learning behaviours.  We design, organise and sequence our mixed age curriculum to ensure that children are not merely covering content but achieving a depth to their learning which enables them to use their skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum. This careful curriculum sequencing means that we build in opportunities to revisit previous learning, which allows children to build on their prior knowledge and gradually develop a deeper understanding of the skills and processes within subjects at their own pace and in the best possible way for each individual child. 

It is essential for our pupils to develop the skills and resilience they need to be able to learn effectively. Our Abbey Village Learning Behaviours have been designed as a progressive framework that encourages independence, motivation and stamina. Our Learning Behaviours are underpinned by our curriculum intent. 

Careful analysis and discussion about our pupils’ backgrounds, life experiences and culture has helped us to design a curriculum intent with eight key priorities underpinning every subject area. We believe that by focusing on the following key priorities our children will be ready to successfully meet the challenges of the next stage of their education and their lives.
